This is the share of YEL in a business owner’s total pension
The share of YEL pension is highest in disability pensions.
YEL pension accounts for less than half the total pension of retired business owners. This is shown by statistics from the Finnish Centre for Pensions, which cover business owners who retired between 2021 and 2024.
In 2021–2024, 47% of the total average pension of all business owners who retired on old-age pension or disability pension came from YEL pension. Their average total monthly pension was €1,682.
This shows that a large proportion of business owners have also worked as employees during their careers, and therefore have accrued pension not only through YEL but also through the earnings-related pension system.
Among those who retired on old-age pension as business owners, YEL pension accounted for 46% of their total pension in 2021–2024. The average total pension of those retiring on old-age pension was €1,769 per month. For those who retired with business owner status, the average total pension was 85% of the average pension of others who retired during the same period.
For business owners who retired on disability pension in 2021–2024, the share of YEL pension in the total pension was higher, at 53%. The average total pensions of those who retired from running their own business on disability pension were slightly higher than the disability pensions of others who retired during the same period.
