Employment

The Employment section gathers the steps you take as an employer in one place. For example, it has information about payroll, working hours and changes to employment, such as lay-offs. It also has information about cooperation negotiations, collective bargaining agreements and company-specific agreements.

The key laws affecting the employer-employee relationship are the Employment Contracts Act, the Working Hours Act and the Annual Holidays Act. Other laws regulating employment rights and obligations include the Non-discrimination Act, the Act on the Protection of Privacy in Working Life, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and the Occupational Health Care Act.

In this section:

Wages and Benefits

The level of pay is defined in the employment contract and the collective bargaining agreement which binds the employer. If you as an employer are not bound by a collective bargaining agreement, you must pay your employees normal, reasonable remuneration.

Working Hours

Working hours act, collective bargaining agreements and locally agreed working time arrangements affect the agreement on working hours.

Leave and Absences

Annual leave and sick leave are among the most common reasons for employee absence from work.

Other reasons for absence may be parenthood or compassionate leave, study or sabbatical leave, as well as completion of national service. Several pieces of employment legislation and collective bargaining agreements regulate employee leave and absence. In addition, the employer and employee can always agree on unpaid leave.

Collective Bargaining Agreements

Alongside employment legislation, collective bargaining agreements are of key significance in employment. Before signing a contract, a prospective employer should work out which collective bargaining agreement employees will be covered by. It is also possible that no collective bargaining agreement applies.
